Tips from the Field

Agronomy Update | Canola Hybrid Selection

Now that harvest is wrapping up and field work is slowing down, everyone has some time to look at what next steps will look like when picking a canola hybrid. Canola hybrids seem to cycle quicker than they have in the past. Gone are the years of having a hybrid being an "industry favorite". With new breeding techniques, hybrids seem to improve quicker than in the past. UFA vendors are always pushing for better yield and better disease packages for growers to optimize profitability!

When looking at new hybrids, yield is a top priority. Always try to analyze local data but looking at data from Western Canada will provide a big picture view of how hybrids perform across different environments. Look for yield leaders that provide consistent results. The links below are a great way to analyze data from our vendors or talk to your local CAM as they have toured some of these sites this past summer! Ask them for details on new hybrids.

Straight, Late Swath, or Swath? Harvest management can be tough to figure out when there isn't an industry standard. Inside UFA's Canola Seed Guide, we have rated the hybrids in one chart to help understand how they all compare.
